After Thetis abandoned Peleus and returned to the sea, he entrusted young Achilles to the wise centaur Chiron on Mount Pelion. Chiron fed him the innards of lions and the marrow of she-wolves to make him fierce and strong, and taught him archery, hunting, music, medicine, and swordsmanship.
