At eighteen, Hercules slew a great lion that had been preying on the flocks of Thespius on Mount Cithaeron. He spent fifty days as a guest of King Thespius — who, wishing powerful grandsons, sent each of his fifty daughters to Hercules on successive nights. All fifty bore his children.
