An insane Heracles is depicted killing his son while Megara stands horrified on the right side of the scene (National Archaeological Museum, Madrid, c. 350–320 B.C.E.)
Hera sent a fit of madness upon Hercules. In a blind, raging frenzy he killed his wife Megara and their children, believing them to be enemies. When he returned to his senses and understood what he had done, his grief was absolute. He sought the Oracle at Delphi for guidance on how to atone.
