Born in Thebes, Boeotia. Hera, furious at Zeus's infidelity, delayed his birth so that Eurystheus — born the same day — would become king of Greece instead of Hercules, fulfilling Zeus's promise. His name, Heracles, means "glory of Hera" — an irony that would define his entire life.
