The Council of Constance finally ends the Western Schism that has divided the Catholic Church since 1378. The Roman Pope Gregory XII and the Pisan Pope John XXIII resign, while the Avignon Pope Benedict XIII is excommunicated. Martin V is elected in their place and returns the papacy to Rome.
The Council of Constance also condemns John Wycliffe (dead since 1384) and Jan Hus, who attends the council under a promise of safe conduct. He is instead arrested and handed over to secular authorities, who burn him at the stake.
