The Seljuks under Alp Arslan defeated the Byzantines under Romanos IV Diogenes; Romanos was captured and held for a week before being released. This battle led to the capture of most of Anatolia by the Seljuks and their subordinates, while Romanos quickly lost a civil war and was supplanted and blinded.
