Philip IV of France pressured a deadlocked enclave to elect a French pope (Clement V) in 1305, who then moved the papacy to Avignon in 1309. The popes stayed in Avignon under French influence until 1376, when Gregory XI departed for Rome.
The election of Gregory's successor Urban VI was contested, leading to the Western Schism (see below in timeline).
