Abu Muslim led a revolt against Umayyad rule that began in Khurasan and spread eastward to Iraq and Syria. The Umayyads were defeated and most of the family killed, except the future Abd al-Rahman I, who fled to Iberia and founded the Emirate of Cordoba.
