Abbasid Caliphate established

After the successful Abbasid Revolution (747-750, see above), al-Saffah was declared Caliph. The capital was moved from Damascus to Kufa, shifting the empire's political center from Syria to Iraq and Persia. Al-Saffah's successor, al-Mansur, would stabilize the empire and found Baghdad. (He also executed the victorious Abbasid general, Abu Muslim.)
