The Moonlit Throne Incident

Many thousands of miles from Earth, a being once lived upon the Moon. Its origin, whether man-made, Demon or alien, is a riddle for the ages. Apparently, this Moon Presence had spent an unfathomable amount of time observing the Earth, monitoring humanity and their new neighbours. It watched the fall of the old world, the rise of the new, every dead king and new ruler, every war, every peace.

It did not like what it saw.

During a particularly chilly February, that of the year 1918, the Moon Presence crashed to Earth, forming a dazzling streak of light across the sky that was unmissable by any of the world's nations. The treasure at the end of the trail lay in the frozen Scythian Wastes. The Moon Presence sought to dig into the Earth's core, spilling the world's guts and feeding on it for however long it could.

Within two months, twenty countries had formed an elite task force to destroy the Moon Presence. Notable absences included Holy Romagna, the squabbling polities of Ma-i, and Ke La Ma Si.

The end of the Moonlit Throne Incident was a bloody one. Many soldiers had been sent to die for their world, and the godly presence showed few signs of slowing down. In an act of desperation, King Kurt of Novoselic gave his life to imbue his Holy Hunters with powerful, primal magic. While this was not the only contributing factor to the end of the incident, it was one of the first major blows.

In the end, it took untold thousands to put an end to the Moon Presence, and no country was left unscarred by the campaign. This, unfortunately, did not result in a lesson learned and the establishment of a worldwide peace. If anything, the post-Moonlit Throne world was much more paranoid, much more prone to conflict.
