During the Roman occupation of Grohl, sixteen men and women, from Novosel government officials to foreign diplomats and even the leader of the Red Ruhr Army terrorist group, were sealed inside Weidelsburg Palace by Nuova Roma's invasion force. Prelati, the ever-curious primordial spirit, took control of the palace's systems and 'stole' the hostages from under the Romans' noses.
In town squares all over Novoselic, screens were set up, through which alchemical light danced and rearranged itself to create moving images that corresponded to cameras within Weidelsburg - this technology would be the basis of the first Pulverlicht boxes that would be a fixture of homes a mere ten years later. These screens showed the Novosel public the goings-on of the sealed palace and its sixteen inmates.
Prelati's game was simple: The sixteen inmates were to live a communal life, with all amenities accounted for. The only way to leave would be to kill and get away with it. The killer would, in theory, be set free, and the other inmates executed.
Clara Owen, a former medic for the Albian Navy turned Field Commander of the Novosel Bestiary, was a pivotal figure in the 'Royal Killing Life', deducing the identities of would-be escapees whenever a killing occurred. Mock trials in the Ausschuss Chamber sealed the fates of five murderers, enabling the others to eventually outsmart Prelati and destroy his 'game'.
In the end, five people survived the events that transpired in Weidelsburg: Bestiary Field Commander Clara Owen, Interim Government Head Iwan Volkshard, Bestiary Head Crow Moirai, Hunters' Church Archdeacon Silvonne Alicolis, and former Queen Sonia Sobieslaw Niewazne. The five survivors rejoined the defense of Grohl and were pivotal in the final push to drive the Romans out of the city in 1924.
