In the Nibelung’s hoard, the hero Siegfried slayed the mighty dragon-giant Fafnir with the unbreakable blade Nothung. Instead of dying for good, Fafnir possessed Siegfried's arm as he tastes the dragon’s blood, becoming a wraith-like being known as the Drachenauge. Odin’s dominion over the gods was secured once his competitor is killed, but he was humiliated by the hero not long after, who also awakened the imprisoned Valkyrie Brunnhilde.
