Vallakia, a poor polity in the Southeast of Novoselic, still clung onto its royal family even into the 15th Century. The last of these kings was Mircea II Dracul, a young and amicable man. He had often sought peace with the nascent Ottoman Empire and Novoselic alike, seeing fealty to two larger nations as critical to Vallakia's survival. In 1442, Vlad Dracul, Mircea's younger brother, caused a diplomatic incident in the Ottoman lands by insulting some minor lord. This was, to the Sultan Murad II, an unacceptable breach of hospitality, and soon enough, both Ottoman soldiers and Vallakian peasants were breaking down the palace gates. The revolt was a drawn-out affair, however, and Mircea and Vlad formed a Government-In-Exile with a strong loyalist base.
In 1447, the conflict drew to a close. Murad II had sent the knight John Hunyadi to storm Mircea's compound single-handedly. A thousand men died to Hunyadi's blade before a single cut could reach his cheek. Vlad Dracul was cut down before his older brother's eyes. When Mircea's heart was pierced with a white-hot cross, the latent energies of the Irkalla coursed into his body, as though to feed on the curse of his family. This brought new, unholy life into Mircea, who took Hunyadi's eye and glutted on the corpse of his own kin. Mircea was killed, but his unlife had only begun. To this day, Mircea's curse haunts Southeastern Novoselic, and the 'Mircean Vampyre' is its own recognised species amongst Hunters.
Hunyadi would go on to sire a bloodline of Vampyre Hunters, amongst which one can count the Van Richten and Schönberg lineages.
