Hala introduces 8-yr-old Kukui to families in Iki Town in efforts to socialize him, partly because he feels he cannot provide a stable home life by himself as a widower politician. While Kukui is largely disregarded by neighborhood kids for being somewhat antisocial (quiet and timid but explosive when provoked), Kapono (6 yrs old) and his wealthy and spiritually-involved family embrace him. They become close friends, and his family greatly supplements Hala's parenting.
