Phineas Gage

Railroad worker who in 1848 had a rod shot through his head due to a roadbed blasting incident.

  • Famously survived the horrific event
  • Was part of a freak show afterwards; later moving to Chile and finally California, were he passed away

Cage was studied by two doctors after the accident

  • John Harlow, his physician from before the accident, noted that he had changed since the accident
  • Henry Bigelow, a surgery professor at Harvard, noted contrarily that his body and mind recovered with only minor disturbances
