Marie Jean Pierre Flourens

Worked with pigeons and rabbits and found that

  1. Removing cerebrum abolished perception and judgement
  2. Removing cerebellum impairs motor coordination and equilibrium

He was unable to ascribe different functions to cortex potentially due to:

  • using lower animals with less cortical dependence
  • being uncareful with the location and size of cortical ablations
  • being driven to prove phrenologists wrong
