Andreas Vesalius

Founder of modern human anatomy.

  • Corrected Galen's influential work with his detailed anatomy book De humani corporis fabrica (De fabrica | 1543)
    • especially disproved the idea of the rete mirabile exists in humans
  • Studied on (sometimes stolen) human corpses and many animals
  • Believed brain was the center of the mind and emotions
  • Concluded that ventricles are not unique to humans and thus not seat of the mind
  • Still maintained idea of animal spirits as the force behind cognition
